Below are common questions about counseling.
The first step is easier than you think.
Q. Do I have to have a big problem?
No, you do not. People consult with counselors for many reasons. We are trained to work with a wide variety of issues. Many individuals choose to have an ongoing relationship with their counselor to provide additional insight into their daily lives, as well as to provide a confidential venue in which to vent pressing feelings and thoughts.
Q. May I bring a family member or friend with me?
It is important that you feel comfortable with your counselor. Sometimes, this means bringing along a trusted family member or friend at the beginning of your services. We can also decide whether having additional people in the room would be helpful to resolve your concerns.
Q. How often should I come in? How many sessions should I expect?
The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your personal situation. You’re likely to benefit most by committing to frequent sessions of 50 minutes each. Consistent sessions will help establish momentum toward achieving your goals.
Q. Does this mean I am crazy?
No, working with a counselor does not mean that you are “crazy.” To the contrary, it likely means that you are adaptable and proactive in your quest to move forward in your life. It is important to remember that you are not your problem. You are simply in need of new solutions.
