Stacey Kalin, MA, LMFT, LPC, CADC II, NCC

Stacey Hatch Portland Counselor About UsI believe that everyone can reach a state of well-being. We will work with the strengths you already posses and work toward where you want to be. The techniques I use are based on the theories of solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral, motivational interviewing, and family systems.

I have spent my career focused on improving the lives of others. Clients, students and friends describe me as a warm, friendly, personable woman who has a good sense of humor. They say I relate well with people and have a way of putting people at ease. I am honest and tend to be both direct and supportive in addressing client issues.

I hold a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark College and a Master’s in Marriage, Family and Couples Counseling from Portland State University. I specialized in children/ adolescents; addictions; and marriage, couples, and families. I am a licensed professional counselor, a licensed marriage and family counselor, a certified alcohol and drug counselor, and a nationally certified counselor. I am also a professor of psychology at Portland Community College. My previous background is education, and I worked for eight years as an elementary school teacher.

Clients come to me with a variety of issues ranging from difficulties with their family, friends and relationships to parenting problems, divorce issues, drinking too much or taking drugs, and/or job/school related problems. Some people are feeling depressed or anxious without really knowing why they feel that way. Most clients come wanting relief from things that are troubling them.

Sessions focus on what you want to talk about, on what is on your mind. I see therapy as a collaborative process with both of us trying to gain a better understanding of what is happening.  I tend to be an active therapist who is curious about her clients and wants to get at the root of the issue. I am open with what I see and put my observations out there for consideration. I’m very comfortable talking about a wide variety of issues.

My clients tend to be curious or become curious about why things are not going well, and they want to make things better. My approach to therapy focuses on a client’s strengths and competencies in order to encourage the desired change in his or her life.

Timothy West, MA, LPC, CADC I, MAC, NCC

Tim West Counselor About UsI believe my role in counseling is to help people find ways to live life from a healthier place, and that everyone can live life happier. I offer individual counseling, practicing a strength-based approach, that includes utilizing the theories of motivational interviewing, dialectic behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

I work in partnership with my clients to meet their individual needs. I offer counseling to people with all sorts of problems. I also have specialized skills for treating people with a history of trauma, abuse and addiction issues of all kinds. I believe that addiction, both chemical and behavioral, is an effective, yet mal-adaptive, coping mechanism, and that clients who have both mental health and addiction problems should receive therapy for both addiction and mental health simultaneously.

Ariel Malia MA, MFT, LPC

Ariel About UsCounseling has been my passion for over twenty years. I began my career as a camp counselor in 1993, moved into director of counselors, and soon after began my professional education and experience as a therapist. After interning at William Temple House in downtown Portland, I became a family therapist at Youth Contact in Hillsboro. Over the last six years, I have worked as a substance abuse specialist and family therapist for the Beaverton School District. These experiences have allowed me the opportunity to help families and their students find success in a variety of ways — most importantly opening lines of communication that tend to get muddled during the adolescent years.

While working with individuals, couples, adolescents, and families I use a variety of therapeutic techniques. The combining of cognitive-behavioral, solution focused, and family systemic therapy is my holistic and direct approach; I believe this multi-disciplinary approach is most effective in creating change. It takes courage to explore yourself, strength to look back into your history, and patience in our process. During our time together, we will collaboratively establish a plan to create meaningful change.

Clients seek out therapy for a variety of reasons. When feeling depressed, anxious, guilty because you are drinking too much, or just plain stuck, it is difficult to see how life can be different. Engaging in therapy brings these vulnerabilities
to the surface where they can be explored and understood. With genuine care and compassionate exploration, I will create an environment where the difficult questions can be addressed allowing for clarification and growth.

Focusing on my clients strengths, and establishing that honest rapport is the key to my therapeutic practice. My client enters the room, I meet them where they are, and together, we move to where they want to be.
